Question: What are your key areas of research?
My primary focus is entrepreneurial cognition, in particular decisions with high complexity and risk. I came to IB as a unique decision making context for entrepreneurs… something with massive implications for the business, but with both enormous complexity and risk. Initially I was interested in the location decision, but I think the decision to internationalize and how to internationalize, are just as interesting as “where”. I have expanded this interest into a more general epistemological interest in international entrepreneurship… what it is, how we define the phenomenon, and its theoretical growth and concentration.
Question: What are you currently working on?
Hahah, so much. In the IE world there are two key papers I am working on. First, my colleagues and I are looking at how institutional supports translate into entrepreneurial internationalization. Second, my colleagues and I are looking at expanding the utility of entrepreneurial study within IB. Are we really learning enough about the internationalization process, without really considering the fundamental entrepreneurialness, even if it is corporate entrepreneurship, it is a risky, value creating activity and an entrepreneurship less has tremendous insight to offer.
Question: What are a few of your personal hobbies?
I am an oenophile. I love to travel (50+ countries so far). We have a dog that we love to play with. I love movies, although since we had a kid those tastes have skewed very animated! I find politics fascinating. And I cook.
Question: What advice would you give to someone new to IE research?
Take the time to learn the history and progress of the field. We have invented and reinvented ourselves multiple times and those scholars who rely on key citations from 20 years ago without understanding how those citations have been reconsidered OR focusing only on the reconsidering citations without understanding the origin and nascent research is going to struggle speaking to the entire community. The field is not that large, there are a lot of tourists, and the people who know and care about this field expect those doing research in this space to respect the field entire.
Question: Where will we see you next? (conference?)
I am skipping AIB this year (largely for political reasons), but I will be at BCERC, AoM, and Diana.
